The Rueda Standard
is essentially a collection of common Cuban rueda de casino commands/figures. In addition it contains descriptions of all the rueda structures that have been taught at the SalsaNor Rueda Congress – since 2002. And it contains a printable list of the standard figrues, YouTube videos of most of them, a Rueda map, and a few more services.
The main focus is the rueda commands/figrues. And the 50 most important ones are called the core commands/figures. Most of these figures have been used for several years, and are the most likely commands to be called in a social rueda. They are also considered to be common basic rueda figures among the Cubans.
There are more commands in the Rueda standard than the core figures. There is a set of intermediate and advanced commands, also common Cuban rueda figures / commands, but some of these are more recent figures.
Rueda de Casino
Are you still wondering about what this wheel thing is..?
Rueda de casino (= casino wheel) is a Cuban dance, where Cuban salsa (commonly called casino) is danced by several couples in a circle, following the commands from a caller. The caller is one of the dancers in the circle. Each rueda command corresponds to a dance figure, and whenever a command is called, all the couples start dancing the figure at the same time. Several of the commands results in a partner change, and in general partners are constantly changed in rueda de casino. Most figures are danced in couples, but figures may also be various formations with the dancers in the circle (videos with a few examples).
See Wikipedia or other sources for more details about the devellopement of rueda de casino in general.
